Agostino Reghitto Genovese

BASIL
IA, US

Mild, classic Genovese flavor but with less anise flavor. Good for pesto. This variety is from the family of Steve Foisie and is named for his grandfather, Agostino Reghitto, who emigrated from Italy in 1902 and settled in Washington State. Agostino founded the Colonial Gardens Company in Washington in 1902, which raised vegetables to sell at the Tacoma and Olympia markets. Steve Foisie donated this variety of basil to SSE in the late 1980s. While it's unknown if this variety came with the family when they originally emigrated from Italy, Steve and his sister Sue recall that their mother, Della (Reghitto) Foisie (Agostino's daughter) grew basil each year without fail.
