Alaska Frostless

Great yielder of flat, round, yellowish-brown tubers with white flesh. I have to say, this potato lives up to its name. It is still green and growing here in zone 9a on January 3rd after multiple hard frosts. All the other potato varieties and tomatoes are long dead. Definitely has remarkable cold resistance. Alcca Imilla

NPGS Accession PI 642438 AKA Alca Amilla, Alca Imilla, Alka Amilla, Alka Imilla, Alcca Amilla, Alcca Imil la. Mostly purple skin, with some pink and cream-colored smile and other shapes around the eyes, cream-colored flesh. Tubers tend to be round, with dents around the eyes, and smallish but numerous. Solanum tuberosum L. subsp. andigenum (Juz. & Bukasov) Hawkes Landrace collected in Cusco, Peru, locality P. Anta. Zurite at an elevation of 3300m by Coleccion Program. Received by NPGS in 2005

From Curzio Caravati. Medium-large, round to oblong tubers. Pink skin. A seedling of Garnet Chili would make it a sister of Early Rose, released in 1876 at an Annual Agricultural Society Meeting in Marblehead, MA.

Belle de Fontenay

I got these from Seed Savers Exchange, Heritage Farm in 2024. horn-shaped, light yellow tubers, grown in a black SmartBag in 2011, 6 seed pieces yielded 10.5 oz total, with 4 tubers in standard size, 10 mini and 28 micro tubers, the high number of micro tubers in the bag suggest that this variety may be sensitive to higher soil temps, planned to be grown in a red SmartBag in 2012 to test if the light bag color will change the total yield. Grown in 2013 in a 14” Poppy Orange bag, 3 tubers produced 12 oz, 33 tubers, of which 22 mini and 11 micro (even though the yield is quite low when grown in bags, the number of tubers has much improved). In 2015 we received healthy replacement the tubers from the USDA .. on the vines we found a couple seed berries which points to flower fertility.French origin, released in 1885, listed by USDA as PI 200115

Bintje

Commercial variety from Fedco. Yellow skin, yellow flesh Or Miss Bintje, named after a pupil of the Dutch schoolteacher who released this variety in 1905. The most widely grown yellow-fleshed potato in the world because of its storability, proficient growth habits and adaptability to a wide range of soil types. Susceptible to scab.

I got these from Seed Savers Exchange, Heritage Farm in 2024. Medium to large in size with an average length of 8.3 cm and an average width of 7.2 cm. Primarily oblong with some smaller and round. Smooth, partially netted tubers with intensely red skin and yellow-cream flesh. Very uniform with slight variability in skin texture and size. Nice productivity with just over 2 pounds per plant. Very creamy, great level of sweet, moderate level of waxiness. SSE Accession # 133503. These developed in 1962, released in 1974 by NDSU.

Black Fir Apple

A very dark skinned fingerling with an almost entirely purple interior. Produces a large crop of small to medium tubers. Eyes often have a pronounced "brow" over them on one side. Good keeper.

Bodega Red

I got these from Seed Savers Exchange, Heritage Farm in 2024. Generally medium in size with an average length of 8.8 cm and the average width of 7.3 cm. Round to oblong in shape. Bright red skin with cream colored flesh. Moderate uniformity due to variation in size. Great productivity with just under 3 pounds per plant. Waxy, very sweet, and low starch. SSE Accession # 132779. Bodega Red is one of only a handful of potato varieties introduced to the United States directly from the potato motherland: South America. It is one of a rare group of potatoes brought up the west coast of South, Central America and Mexico to the United States and was adopted by early settlers. Genetic testing has shown that the potato originated from Chilean potatoes. Bodega Reds are part of a small group of potatoes, which includes the Makah Ozette that made their way all the way up the West Coast into Southeastern Alaska. Local legend claims that before the Gold Rush of the late 1840s, the Bodega Red potato jumped ship with a sailor in northern California above San Francisco at Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. It prospered, and this area – Bodega Bay to Petaluma and along Tomales Bay into Marin County became known as the potato capital of California. During this time, the Bodega Red was shipped on barges from Bodega Bay to San Francisco where it fed the San Francisco Bay area.
