A handsome, purple-green butterhead lettuce. Broad, smooth leaves are dark purple towards the margins. Wavy margins. Tender, crisp leaves are slightly astringent with average flavor. Plants reach 5-7" tall, 11-12" in diameter. Resists bolting in the heat. White seed. This variety was given to SSE by Mary Schultz (WA SC M) who received it from Jim Tjepkema (MN TJ J). Jim received it in 1986 from Earl Spain (IL SP E). Earl Spain introduced this lettuce into the 1985 SSE Yearbook Exchange and indicated that it had been brought to the US after WW II by German woman.
