VEGETABLES / SQUASH
C.-MOSCHATA
C. moschata. Winter squash. Cheese type. Highly oblate, tan fruit with intermediate ribbing. Smooth fruit rind. Very uniform fruit. Mature fruit range from 4.5-6.5" long, 7.5" to 12.5" wide, and weigh 5-14 lbs. Medium orange flesh with deep orange seed cavities. Flesh measures 1-2" thick. Good eating qualities - flesh is slightly sweet with a relatively low water content and a smooth but slightly coarse texture. Vigorously vining plants with soft hairs. Mid-late season maturing. Fruit kept for 69 days on average when stored at Heritage Farm in 2013-3014. Storage qualities may have been compromised by squash mosaic virus. Acquired by SSE from Long Island Seed and Plant Co (CV Lon). An East Coast heirloom remembered as a great pie squash by people in New York and New Jersey. Ken Ettlinger of CV Lon acquired his original seed stock in the late 1970s from East End farm stands where farmers saved their own seeds. SSE Accession # 119873
