Good Mother Stallard

Single Image
VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Pole bean, climbing 6.5-7'. Seeds about 1/2'' long, brown with irregular white markings (or sometimes white with brown markings). Grown by Jeanine Scheffert in 2021 for the Collection Documentation Project; she evaluated the variety as "so tasty, so beautiful, grows so well." Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee received this variety from Silas Gilliam of Wise, Virginia in the late 1970s. Silas Gilliam got the beans from Mildred Addington of Virginia. They were grown by Mildred's mother-in-law, Mrs. Stallard, who in turn had received them from Reuben Powers. SSE estimates this variety likely dates to the 1930s. SSE Accession # 101498
