Brickhouse Old Collard

Vegetables / The Cabbage Family (Brassicaceae) / Collard

Large, dark green leaves with white or purple midveins. Not uniform. Some plants are lighter green or yellow-green. Looks like plants may form a head if given a chance. Plants 14-20 inches tall and 26-48 inches wide when fall grown. Variety has a stronger flavor with earthy notes. Thicker leaves have more texture and require longer cooking. This variety of collard was stewarded by Buddy Brickhouse of Gum Neck, North Carolina. He suspects it dates back to his maternal grandmother and therefore, likely prior to 1910. In 2004, Buddy gave seeds to Dr. Edward Davis, a professor of geography at Emory & Henry College, who was collecting heirloom collard strains for preservation on behalf of the USDA. Seed Savers Exchange requested this variety in 2016 from the USDA collection (G 32574). SSE Accession # 133001
