Old Jake

Vegetables / The Cabbage Family (Brassicaceae) / Rutabaga

Some list as a turnip, but may be a Rutabaga. Origin is the grounding of a small Canadian vessel taking Turnips to Boston for market & ballast. While trying to seek shelter from a storm, a wrong choice was made entering a Maine island harbor. Wreck caused roots to disperse into the sea & wash up thru the Winter, being utilized by savvy farmers to feed animals in the Spring. First seed was saved from stray turnips flowering in seaweed, and flavor was found excellent for people too. Has quite a history of use on North Haven in particular, but also other Maine island communities.
