Breisgauer Begrannter Roter Land

Landrace from the southwestern region of Germany. Awnless, despite translation of "begrannt" as bearded. Upright, 50" tall, with big, heavy heads, very sturdy stems, and no tendency to lodge. Seems to have tolerance for both dry and very wet/humid conditions. Very easy to thresh but does not shatter.

AKA Silverskin buckwheat. Fagopyrum tataricum. Tartarian Buckwheat. More upright than regular buckwheat, white flowers. Used to make "ployes", a buckwheat pancake traditionally made in Maine's Madawaska Valley and surrounding area. 120-150 days. Ploye Recipe from Sandra Corriveau: Ingredients: 1 cup (250 ml) of white flour, 2 cups (500 ml) of buckwheat flour from Madawaska, 2 cups (500 ml) of cold water, 1 tsp. (5 ml) of fine salt. Directions: Mix it all and add 2 cups (500 ml) of boiling water, and 2 tsp. (10 ml) of baking powder. Cook in a hot pan on one side only.

High in protein, hard winter wheat is superior for bread making. This heirloom winter wheat was collected in 1900 from Ukraine. It does best sown in the fall and harvested the following summer. During the winter months, it remains low growing. As the spring progresses, the seed stems become very tall and sturdy. Easy to thresh and yields heavily, even in poor soil and partial shade.
