Black Gilliflower

Large, oblong, conical ribbed fruit. Dark red deepening almost to black. Flesh is greenish white, quite hard initially, becoming rich, mild with sweet flavor and a distinctive aroma. Prized for baking, desserts and drying. Vigorous, healthy and fruitful tree. Hangs long on the tree, but must not be allowed to become overripe as flesh soon becomes dry. Ripens in late September or October depending on location. Zones 4-9. Thought to have originated in Connecticut in the late 1700s. SSE Accession # 100179 NCGR-Geneva
