NOTE: Only available Jan through Mar. Ships Mar/Apr. Rather flattish shape. Skin color is not particularly attractive though makes up for in flavor; greenish yellow with dull red stripes. Tender but firm, exceedingly juicy, yellow tinged flesh. Pleasant sweet/subacid, rich flavor. Very good quality cooking, eating and baking apple. Keeps well through March. Vigorous growing tree requires pruning. Young, productive bearer; reliable cropper. Shows some fire blight resistance. Ripens during September. Hardy to -40 degrees F. Fine old Delaware and Pennsylvania apple. Open-pollinated seedling of Vandevere. Derives its name from that the original tree grew up next to the smokehouse of a Lancaster County, PA farmer.
