Essex Turban

C. maxima. Turban squash. Large oblate to round fruit with warty, slightly ribbed, orange skin. Skin has lighter peach colored markings scattered around the fruit. Fruit measure 7-9.5" long, 9.5-12" in diameter, and weigh up to 17 lbs. Pale orange flesh color is about 1" thick. Fair flavor. Stringy flesh. Dry matter content: 10.49%. BRIX reading 7.8. Vining plants. Moderate productivity when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE in 1986 by Louise Bastable (MA BA L) via Glenn Drowns (IA DR G). Bastable acquired it in 1985 from John Wyche (OK WY J). This variety has been available to American gardeners since at least 1880 when it was offered by such seedsmen as J.J.H Gregory (Marblehead, MA) and E. Fred Washburn (Boston, MA). It was developed by Aaron Low of Essex, MA as a cross between the Turban and the Hubbard. SSE Accession # 119849
