VEGETABLES / COLLARD
Beautiful variety. Succulent, excellent flavor. Compact plants; short stem; yellow-green-blue leaves; when spring planted, plants formed a nice, tight cabbage-like head during fall. Light green petioles; round leaf blades, dentate margin. Leaf bloom. Plants measure 1.1-1.5' in height and 1.3-2.0' in diameter. Leaves measure 10.6-16.5" in length and 7.5-12.6" in diameter. Plants uniform. A South Carolina heirloom from Exchange lister Rodger Winn (SC WI R). Rodger has grown several strains of this variety over the years and observed that it's widely grown in and near Little Mountain, SC. This particular strain was given to Rodger by Camelia Long, who is locally known for her gardens and for sharing seeds with many area residents. She and her husband were market growers from the 1940s through the 1960s. Rodger donated this variety to Seed Savers Exchange in 2012 and noted that his great aunt Isabelle makes sauerkraut from the leaves. SSE Accession # 131745
