HEAD
Butterhead. Forms a loose head. Green leaves. Relatively small, compact plants reach 4-5" tall and 8-11" in diameter at market maturity. Largest leaves measure 4-6" long and 5-7" wide. Buttery flavor and texture; tender and crisp; not bitter. Average time to bolting when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Black seeds. Donated to SSE by Gene Mentzer. This variety was originally brought to the U.S. in 1842 by Maria Arnold and passed down through the Straesser-Mentzer families of Martinsburg, PA. Gene Mentzer received it from his aunt Louise Phillips when she was in her 90's. Louise grew the lettuce for 50 years or more. SSE Accession # 111913
