Single Image
VEGETABLES / LETTUCE
LEAF
Butterhead. Moderately heading. Broadly spatulate leaves blushed with red, especially in the center. Slightly ruffled margins; moderate surface blistering. Plants average 4" tall and 10" in diameter. Largest leaves average 6.5" long by 4.9" wide. Good texture, mild flavor. Slightly bitter. White seeded. Mid-season maturing. This variety was donated to SSE by Diana Talcott (VT TA D) who received it through the SSE Yearbook Exchange from Sylvia Davatz (VT DA S). It's originally from Switzerland where in 1995, Sylvia purchased the variety from a Swiss seed company named Mauser. Sylvia originally offered this variety in the Exchange under the name 'Pfluck Salat Rubin' which means "picking lettuce ruby." Since the first part of the name simply indicates which type of lettuce it is, Sylvia decided to shorten the name to just 'Rubin' and has been listing in the Exchange under that name.
