VEGETABLES / PEA
SHELLING
Shelling pea. Long, green, slightly curved pods contain 6-8 peas. Peas are juicy, sweet, and delicious. Pods measure ~3.5" long. Mostly one pod per peduncle, sometimes two. Plants reach 4.5-5.5ft tall with 1-3 basal branches. Shattering dry pods. Large, green wrinkled seeds. White flowers. Highly productive. Early to mid-season maturing. A favorite in the 2020 ADAPT trials for yield and earliness. This variety was donated to SSE in 2014 by Beth Buhr of Westgate, Iowa. Beth and her husband Tom have maintained this pea variety since 1977 when they received it from Tom’s father, Walter Henry Buhr (deceased). That same year, Walter shared some seed with Beth and Tom’s nephew, Victor (Vic) Matthias. This was fortuitous; Tom and Beth lost their entire seed harvest to rodent pests in about 2008, and Vic was able to share some of his to replenish their supply. Beth stated that Walter Buhr started planting this seed in 1928, but it's origin beyond that is unknown. SSE Accession # 132331
