Gatterman Heirloom

Single Image
FLOWERS / POPPY
A stunner! Powder-puff, "chrysanthemum" type flowers of a dark pink color. Very showy. The chrysanthemum trait seems to be a little unstable, leading to a small percentage of plants with simple flowers (4 petals). Early to mid-season. Medium-small, dehiscent capsules. Plants 2.5 feet tall. Grown by Heide Kass in 2021 for the Collection Documentation Project; she reported low germination and rated the variety "very good" overall. This family heirloom poppy came to SSE in 1995 from Hazel Perez of Kansas City, Missouri. It was grown by her parents, Bessie and Raymond Gatterman of Salisbury, MO. The family story says the poppy seeds were brought to the United States from Germany by Hazel's grandparents when they immigrated in the 1800s. SSE Accession # 110263
