Carentan

Single Image
VEGETABLES / LEEK
Long, slender stems. Some variability in stem size. Little to no swelling at base of stems. Bluish-green foliage. Relatively low leaf density. Upright foliage. Plants reached 13-19" tall and stems measured 5-8" long and 0.6-1.2" wide in 2016 planting at Heritage Farm. This variety appears in USDA bulletin 21 from 1901 along with many similar names like Giant Carentan, Extra Large Carentan, French Carentan, Monstrous Carentan. Vilmorin suggests that Carentan was a selection from Large Rouen. Our version is a decent match to Giant Carentan in Vilmorin's The Vegetable Garden. Donated to SSE by Will Bonsall (ME BO W) who acquired it from Rose-Marie Lacherez (AUSL LA R) of Queensland, Australia. SSE Accession # 111408
