Maes' Stick Beans

Pole, dry bean. Seeds are dark tan; medium-sized; and oval in shape with squared ends. Excellent, robust flavor and texture as a dry bean. Also used as a snap bean, though they are a bit tough and astringent when raw. Pods are green, curved, and highly constricted between seeds; 4-5" long; 0.5" wide. Strong suture string. Pods develop a red blush and light red stripes at maturity. 3-6 seeds per pod. Plants are strong climbers. White flowers. Medium productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 2015 by Ellen Fouser-Gormley of Woodford County, Kentucky. This bean was grown by Ellen's mother, Nancy Moran Fouser, who first got the seeds in 1978 from her grandmother, Lilly Mae Darnell Moran of Columbia, Kentucky. Lilly Mae received her seeds from her own mother, Birdie Mae Taylor Darnell (1879-1945) also of Columbia. SSE Accession # 132764
