Excellent cucumber. Very sweet, juicy, and crisp. Market mature fruit dark green with light green stripes and speckling. Brown spines on moderately elevated warts. Superficial ribbing. Slightly angular in cross section. Moderately glossy skin. Pale green flesh. Fruit 4-6" long, 1-2" wide, and 2-7oz. Seed mature fruit yellow; 6-9" long, 2.8-3.1" wide, and 1.1-1.8lbs. Plants vining with hard pubescence. High productivity; mid-season maturing; plants were afflicted by anthracnose when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Previously distributed by SSE under the misspelled name 'Sumpter.' Acquired by SSE from CV So1, who indicated that this variety was developed by Clemson University. Further research by SSE staff indicates that it was developed by W.C. Barnes at the Clemson University Agricultural Experiment Station and Asgrow Seed Co and released in 1973. It was developed from a number of different cucumber lines, including USDA Pis 197087, 196289, Wisconsin SMR 18, and a variety of Asgrow lines for field resistance of 7 different diseases.
