VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Pole, snap bean. Very good flavor and texture. Pods green, recurving; flat; 6-8" long; 0.7" wide. Strong suture string. Pods develop a light red blush and stripes at maturity. 6-8 seeds per pod. Seeds dark tan, large, and long. Good flavor, smooth texture as a dry bean. Plants are strong climbers. White flowers. Medium productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 2014 by Donald McCourry of Marion, North Carolina. It was given to Donald in 2005 by his cousin Dewey Bennett, who had received the variety from an older gentleman in Norfolk, Virginia. This gentleman indicated that the bean had been grown in his own family for 100 years, therefore SSE estimates the variety dates to circa 1900. Donald and his family use the variety as a fresh snap bean, and they also freeze, can, and pickle the pods. SSE Accession # 132350
