VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-BUSH
Bush, snap bean. Standard flavor. Green beans are slightly tough and benefit from cooking. Pods green; straight; 3.5" long and 0.5" wide. Strong suture string. 3-4 seeds per pod. Seeds small, oval, and tan colored with a narrow grey eye. Standard flavor, good texture as a dry bean. Can be hard seeded. Plants grow up to 1' tall. Light pink flowers. Medium productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Early maturing. Donated to SSE in 2014 by Becky Griffin of Holly Springs, Georgia. Becky has grown the variety since about 2000 after she received seeds from her Aunt Matilda Hunt Hatfield Blackburn (1926-2013). Matilda grew the variety most of her life in Pike County, Kentucky. Matilda’s mother, Sarah Blackburn Hunt (1903-1986), grew the beans the entire time Aunt Matilda was growing up. Sarah got the seed from her mother Carolina Smith Blackburn (1870-1931). Aunt Matilda told Becky that Carolina got the seed from her mother, Celia Bevins Smith (1843-1912), who is Becky's great-great-grandmother. This variety is used by Becky as a snap bean.
