Originated in New Jersey 1800. Taken to Tompkins co. N.Y. by Jacob Wycoff in 1804. Fruit is lg. with red stripes and red mottling on yellow background. Skin is greasy thin tender. Flesh white fine grained tender but crisp. Mild aromatic, non acidic well balanced sweet tart flavor. Keeps flavor when cooked. Subject to watercore, makes fruit sweeter but shortens storage life. Tree is very vigorous healthy, but fruit tends to rot in hot weather unless picked when ripe. Ripens over long period during month of Sept. Sterile triploid pollen, cannot pollinate other apples. 1 scion.
