VEGETABLES / LETTUCE
ROMAINE
A romaine-like lettuce with variation in heading habit. Good flavor, sweet aftertaste. Some plants have a more open form while others are more upright; leaves are green with purple spotting. A few plants have a purple blush; amount of spotting varies within population. Plants measure 10-13" tall and 15-16" in diameter when grown on Heritage Farm in 2018. Leaves toothed at the margin and also have stiff hairs on the underside of the leaf midribs. This is an old variety which explains the lack in uniformity. Black seeded. This accession matches the description of Spotted Aleppo in The Vegetable Garden, 1885. SSE Accession # 112460
