Single Image
VEGETABLES / TOMATILLO
P. philadelphica. Interesting variety that has yellow mature fruit, but occasionally develop a purple color when exposed to sunlight. Fruit husks with variable purple striping, ranging from absent (infrequent) to strongly present. Round fruit are 1.5-1.75 inches in diameter and weigh up to 1.5 ounces. Plants are 2-3 feet tall and have a 5 foot sprawl; when trellised, branches remain erect, making harvesting from these beautiful plants a breeze. Stems range from purple-green to dark purple. Very good tart flavor. Donated to SSE in the mid 1990s by Dorothy Beiswenger (MN BE D) who obtained it from friends in Crookston, MN. This variety is reportedly an heirloom within their family.
