VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-BUSH
Bush, dry bean. Plants grow up to 15" tall. Light green pods develop vivid red stripes as they mature. Pods 5-6" long; 0.6" wide; straight. 4-5 seeds per pod. Seeds cream-colored with red-purple mottling; plump; oval. Standard flavor and texture. Pink flowers. Medium-high productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Early maturing. Donated to SSE in 2012 by Frances Fletcher of Arkansas. Frances has been growing and saving seed of this variety since the 1980s when she received it from a friend and coworker named Verla Curtright. Verla herself was not a gardener; the seeds were from Verla's recently deceased mother who had been growing this bean variety in her garden outside of Fayetteville, AR. Verla thought that the variety had been developed as part of the World War II Victory Garden effort and made available to home gardeners through the University of Arkansas. SSE Accession # 131775
