VEGETABLES / MELON
Large, early maturing, productive "cantaloupe" with thick, light orange flesh and a thin rind. Round fruits are heavily netted, abcise from the vine when ripe and have a high cracking tendency. Fruits are typically between 5.6-7.5 pounds, 7-8.5 inches long and 6.5-7.5 inches wide. Flavor is classic, sweet and slightly floral with a moderately juicy but firm texture. Good classic melon. BRIX measured 11.0 in 2020 when grown at Heritage Farm. Plants are highly vining, and moderately vigorous with a moderate susceptibility to powdery mildew. This melon is a favorite of Al Tomlinson, who has been growing it since about 1982. Al received seeds from a local gentleman in Archie, Missouri named Hallie Level. Hallie said that he spent about 30 years developing this cantaloupe by crossing different types together, and this was what he came up with (the variety was stable when it was given to Al). Therefore, Al estimates Hallie probably started working on the melon in the early 1950s. Al shared seeds with Seed Savers Exchange in 2017. SSE Accession # 133478
