VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
snap bean, normally cooked by donor; raw snaps are a bit tough, but have good fruity flavor, but astringent This variety was donated to SSE in 2014 by Scott Hartman of San Jose, California. Scott began growing the beans in 2013 after receiving them from Maria Tamburrino through a friend-of-a-friend. Maria began growing this variety in her Berkeley, CA garden in 1974. The beans are originally from her father, Alfredo Tamburrino. Maria can remember her father growing and saving seed from this variety in his garden in Verona, New York as far back as 1962. Alfredo emigrated from southern Italy in 1914, but Maria is certain he did not bring seeds of the variety with him. Rather, she feels it is most likely that the seeds were brought from Italy to Alfredo at some later point by another family member. Maria remembers her mother steaming the green pods and serving them chilled “with chunks of garlic, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar.” SSE Accession # 132653
