Pygott

Single Image
VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Moderate climbing tendency. Violet flowers. Moderate purple pigmentation on stems, racemes, and pod tips. Straight, pendant pods, 7-9" long by 0.5" wide. Ovoid, cream-colored seeds with purple-gray mottling and dark eyes. 14-19 seeds per pod. Dry cowpeas have a standard flavor. Standard productivity. Mid-maturing. This variety was donated to SSE in the mid 1990s, likely from Exchange listers Orral and Joan Craig (IL CR O). In the 1994 Yearbook, the Craigs described this cowpea as "raised for over 100 years by Pygott family in Louisiana." This source history is very similar to the 'Pigott Early Settler' cowpea introduced into the Exchange circa 1993 by lister John Coykendall (TN CO J). When grown for comparison in 2011 and 2012, SSE staff found no discernable differences between accession 108987 and a seed sample of 'Pigott Early Settler' cowpea from John Coykendall. SSE Accession # 108987
