the tree is called Osage Orange; the wood is called bois d'arc (often misspelled bodark) or osage-wood or bow wood, the fruit is usually called a hedge apple, although in Texas it is sometimes called brain fruit, repels roaches, inner latex of the fruit makes an effective glue, (caveat: it will also ruin a knife), in Arkansas, the autumn hedge apple throw contests are an annual tradition, fruit not "edible" but used medicinally, including in cancer treatment
