Green Top

VEGETABLES / AMARANTH
Grain type. Light green seed heads turn golden at maturity. Terminal seed heads are large and erect to slightly drooping. Dark green leaves. Plants grew 4-5' tall in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Flowered mid to late June. White seed. Given to SSE by member Gene Forster (IL FO G) who originally acquired the variety from the Seeds Blum seed company of Boise, Idaho. This variety tends to produce a small percentage of pink-flowered plants (1-2%) which later developed into reddish seed heads. This is believe to be caused by a jumping-gene mutation and not the result of out-crossing. Those plants may be rogued if desired, but the color will reappear in future generations.
