Takane Ruby Buckwheat

Fagopyrum esculentum. Beautiful bright-red-stemmed, green-leafed buckwheat with pink rosy-colored flowers. This is an attractive, fast-growing cover crop, a good food source for pollinators, and makes lovely cut flowers and produces edible seeds. Blooms all season long, but may not set seed in warmer areas until temperatures cool off toward the end of the season. 'Takane Ruby' was selected by Akio Ujihara, a professor emeritus from Shinshu University in Japan. The seeds were originally collected from a unique flowering Fagopyrum esculentum in Yunnan, China at an elevation of 12,000 feet. This attractive plant always starts a conversation in my garden when people see it for the first time.
