Daeyeobdeulggae

Single Image
HERBS-SPICES / PERILLA-SHISO
A Korean perilla which is very rare in the USA. Gray seed. In Korea, both the leaves and seeds of perilla is used. "Deulggae"/"Deulkkae" as well as "kkaenip" makes reference to sesame, which is why perilla is sometimes translated as "wild sesame" from Korean. As you might guess, this shows that the seeds are pressed for oil, which has its own unique, delicious aroma, similar to but not the same as sesame. This strain is likely the same as USDA PI 596292 (South Korea), which is spelled "Daeyeupdlggae." I loosely transliterated my spelling from the Korean letters (대엽 들깨). I don't believe that the Yearbook allows for other languages' writing systems, so the Korean spelling would not work here.
