UZBEK FERTILE

As listed by me and Mason (WI WE M) in the 2017 Yearbook, Dr Barbara Hellier with the USDA Garlic Research Station has collected 20 strains in 2012; all 20 wild strains are supposed to easily produce TGS, aka True Garlic Seed, as the flowers are supposed to be fertile. After so many years, in 2024 at KUFI Farm org we now have reduced the collection to just 5 strains: Z004 produced TGS in 2020; Z057-A produced TGS in 2019 and 2022; Z059-B produced TGS for Mason .. the progeny plant produced TGS for me in 2022; Z080 and Z088 never produced TGS in Kenosha, but certainly produced TGS for Avram at Garlicana in Oregon. Also, these 5 strains have produced nice sized cloves, and Z088 impressed me with the dark red color of the cloves' wrappings. I may not have full bulbs to share, but a number of cloves, mailed individually wrapped with the strain designation. This is the garlic we recommend for SSE members who wish to try their hands at TGS production. NOTE: I don't have time for bulbils removal! These strains have produced fertile flowers and true seed, without the manual removal of the aerial bulbils - it is believed that the removal of the bulbils increases the strength of the flowers. Also, you will notice how the flower matures a round, green fruit and ripens, and ultimately dries with tiny black seeds. Each seed may produce a genetically different plant; different from the mother! A new variety, which needs a number of growing seasons to fully express its features. Planting too early may cause Winter kill, especially if the plant emerged and grows in the early Winter..
