VEGETABLES / ARUGULA
A delightfully mild green, enjoyed by even the arugula-wary! Green, strongly lobed leaves measure 8.3-12" long. Petioles range from light green to light purple and are nice and crunchy. Highly productive plants measure up to 17.5" at their widest point. Highly uniform. Young leaves thoroughly enjoyed by flea beetles after fall transplant in 2024, but quickly grew out of the damage. After enjoying gargeer as a ubiquitous salad green during a prolonged work assignment as a Civil Engineer for the oil industry in Egypt in the early 1990s, Anthony Congram of Bennet, Colorado, thought bringing some seeds with him back to America would be a good idea. Gargeer is the Egyptian Arabic name for arugula. “In Egypt, arugula is served with little preparation. Simply arranged on a plate to accompany a savory dish—like fish and pita bread with tahina dip. I remember buying some gargeer seeds at a small bulk seed shop not far from the Nile in a northern suburb of Cairo,” he says. Anthony donated this variety to SSE in 2022. SSE Accession # 133919
