VEGETABLES / TURNIP
Roots uniform, elliptical in shape, white, 1.75-2.1" long and 1.5-2" wide, about 2 oz. in weight, with many root hairs on the lower half, the top 1/2 inch or less exposed above ground. Plants 14.5" wide. Leaves dark green, oval, erect, 19" long, with a few spines on back, the petioles and midveins white in front and green on back. Grown by Gene Forster in 2020 and by Tammy Laverty in 2021 for the Collection Documentation Project. Gene reported that the roots are crunchy and spicy when raw, with a typical turnip taste when cooked; raw leaves have a mild taste. Tammy noted that the "young turnips and the greens [were] extremely tasty and sweet....the young turnips were the best tasting I've ever had." SSE Accession # 127664
