VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
This is a pole bean best eaten at the snap stage. The eating qualities are good when the beans are small, though they do not stay palatable for very long. When small they have a great texture and are juicy and crunchy. The dry beans are medium sized and can be either oval or cuboid. They are a solid dark gold/orange color. They can be hard seeded. The plants are weakly climbing with stout, plump pods. The immature pods are green with a light pink blush. Each pod contains 5 seeds. This variety of bean came to SSE in the 1990s from Ronald Stuart of Winterset, Iowa. Ronald stated at that time it had been stewarded by the Hogg family for over 140 years and he believes it originally came from Germany. The donor's family uses the bean for canning and fresh eating.
