VEGETABLES / RUTABAGA
Raw roots are crunchy and sweet with a hint of spiciness, but are fibrous and somewhat dry. Cooked roots are sweet and taste like Brussels sprouts and have a mealy texture. As a cooked root this was a favorite of some SSE staff. Elliptic roots are white with a purple top and are half-buried. Roots are 4-6" long, 1.9-3.8" wide, and weigh 5-23 oz. Large dark green rutabaga type leaves are thick and hairy and have thick petioles and significant toothing on the margins. Plants 7.5-13" tall and 26-35" in diameter. Uniform planting. This accession was previously distributed by SSE incorrectly as a turnip, but botanically, it is a rutabaga. SSE Accession # 127627
