VEGETABLES / AMARANTH
Beautiful, tall 5-6' plants that can reach 8-10' according to some descriptions. Dark red to purple inflorescences with short side branches are often drooping to horizontal on the plants. Plants have green/pink stems with elliptic shaped green leaves that have red pigmented margins and veins. Branches are found along the stems. Black seeded. Lodged badly in 2015 at Heritage Farm. This variety is from Dr. Alan Kapuler of Peace Seeds (CV Pe1), whose catalogs offered it from 1985-1993 and from 2002-2014. From 1994-2001, the variety was sold by Deep Diversity, which was a catalog created by Peace Seeds and Seeds of Change. In their 2012 catalog, Peace Seeds indicated that in the 1970s, Mr. Hartman in Jacksonville, Oregon would put 2 pounds of seeds in a jar and hold a contest where people would attempt to guess the number of seeds. $100 was awarded to the person whose guess was closest, and though he never won, Alan Kapuler got his seeds from Mr. Hartman.
