PI 702584. Wiñay is a newly introduced, very cold and drought hardy Peruvian native cultivar. This potato is the result of a joint effort between the USDA and Peruvian partners International Potato Center, Peru (CIP), and local farmers to enhance cold hardiness and frost tolerance in native potato cultivars in Peru. This cultivar is one of two released that features outstanding non-acclimated cold tolerance and acclimation capacity in addition to pest and disease resistance, yield, and tuber quality, combined with exceptional drought tolerance. They are bred to give outstanding performance at very high altitudes (3,800 m / 13,000 ft) with drought, frequent severe frosts, cold snaps, and temperature swings. It also produces a heavy crop of berries. Tubers are long and thin with brown skin decorated with pink to purple patches, particularly around the eyes, yellow flesh and are grown for the fresh market. "Wiñay" is a Quechua word meaning to grow.
