Transkutukú

VEGETABLES / PEANUT
Organic Listing
A rare, beautiful peanut from the Shuar and Achuar communities of the Morona Santiago jungle, Ecuador. It is indigenous to Ecuador and Peru in the Condor Range and the Transkutukú Amazon region in the lowlands of the Zamora and Upano river basins. In the Shuar and Achuar languages, peanuts are called Nuse. In Spanish, this variety is called Maní De Transkutukú. In English, these seeds are sometimes called Fastigiata Pin Stripe Peanut and Jungle Peanut. The hulls are sturdy, deeply ridged and alligatored, compact, storing 1-3 nuts each. The nuts are pinkish-peach colored, with striking light pink to dark purple streaks. These gorgeous peanuts are not just attractive and delicious to people, but also to ground rodents. If you have ground pest pressure, peanuts are easily grown in plastic pots, large plastic bags with drain holes, or smart pots similar to potatoes, but wider than deep, the wider, the better. Long season, 120 days; start indoors early in short-season areas.
