VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Indeterminate. Vigorous climber, but is prostrate when not grown on a trellis. Plants have extensive purple/red pigmentation on leaves and stems. White flowers. Pods are solid green and generally horizontal on the peduncle. Typically 1-3 pods per peduncle. Pods measure 5-10" long and have 7-9 seeds. Dry pods pale tan and straight. Larger, oblong to kidney shaped seeds are cream colored with black eyes and tan coloring immediately around the eye. Late maturing and low productivity when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Richard Knight (KS KN R) who received it circa 1990 from an elderly woman named Anna from Texas. Anna had gotten the cowpeas in Texas and told Richard it was a Texas heirloom.
