VEGETABLES / COLLARD
Very uniform variety. Plants have light green stems, and light green to yellow-green leaves. Leaves are elliptic in shape with a wavy margin. Leaves are entire or slightly lobed and are slightly drooping. Plants have a slight heading capability. Plants measure 17-23 inches tall and 32-43 inches wide. Slightly sweet with a buttery like taste. From Nancy Jernigan of Snow Hill, North Carolina. Nancy and her late husband, James, grew this heirloom variety all their married life, carrying forward the seed saving tradition passed on to them by James’ father, James Albert Jernigan. In 2005, Nancy Jernigan shared some seeds and this history with Dr. John Morgan, a cultural geographer and professor of geography at Emory & Henry College, who was collecting heirloom collard strains for preservation on behalf of the USDA. Seed Savers Exchange requested this variety in 2016 from the USDA collection (G 32748).
