VEGETABLES / RADISH
SUMMER
Garden radish. Multi-colored variety. Most roots are dark purple, but a few are red, white, or bicolor (purple top, white bottom). Significant variation in root shape. Most are triangular to elliptic, but several are round. Bulbs 1.5-4" long, 0.5-1.5" wide, and weigh 0.25-2 oz. Smooth skin; white flesh. Mild flavor; juicy, crunchy. Root position ranges from largely above soil line to mostly buried. Plants reach 8-14" wide. Leaves green, semi-prostrate; petioles light purple. Donated to SSE by Charles Hoehnle (IA HO C) who obtained the variety from his parents, Jacob & Helene Hoehnle, residents of the Amana Colonies who grew the radish as early as the 1930's. Formally known as the Community of True Inspiration, this group originally immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1842 and settled in New York state before coming to Iowa in the 1850s. Previously listed in the SSE Yearbook Exchange as 'Amana Summerrettig'. SSE Accession # 118778
