Pridgen's Yellow

Single Image
VEGETABLES / COLLARD
Leaves are orbicular to obovate with an undulating margin. Leaf color variable from yellow-green to green to blue-green. Low to moderate leaf blistering. Stems white to light green. Non-heading variety. Plants average 3' wide and 2.5' tall. Bob Bulluck of Wilson, North Carolina began stewarding the variety in 2021 from seed he got from Ralph Wayne Pridgen (1941-Living) of Rocky Mount, NC, who got it from his father, Joe Kinzie Pridgen (1912-1994), who had been growing it since the 1940s in Nash County, NC. Mr. Pridgen is a long-time friend of Bob’s father, Robert Herman Bulluck (1929-Living). Soon after the 2020 harvest, Mr. Pridgen asked Mr. Bulluck if he or Bob would be interested in 10 pounds of seed of the yellow cabbage collard he’s grown his whole life. He uttered he was getting old and that the only one of his sons who was into farming was not interested in “messing with it”. Since the seed had been in his family for so long, he didn’t want to lose it or give it to just anyone—eastern North Carolina growers jealously guard their yellow cabbage collard seeds, sharing them only with very close kin. Bob donated this variety to SSE in 2021. SSE Accession # 133875
