C.-MOSCHATA
C. moschata. Large fruit is tan, smooth, and elongate. Moist, stringy, slightly sweet squash used by Libby's for canned 'pumpkin'. Fruit uniformity is high. Market mature fruit 9-12' long, 7-13" wide, and 9-17 lbs. Flesh color is medium orange and about 2" thick. Vine; leaves large 25-30 cm wide, soft pubescence, moderate lobing, and high amount of silvering. Late maturing, moderate productivity when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Acquired by SSE from the USDA (NSL 5192). In the Fall 2012 issue of "Heirloom Gardener," Lawrence Davis-Hollander recounts the following history. The Dickinson family credits Elijah Dickinson, believed to have brought seeds with him when he migrated from Kentucky to Eureka, IL in 1835. In the late 1890s, three Dickinson brothers purchased a canning factory in Eureka; corn, peas and squash were the staple canning crops. They later sold to Libby, McNeill and Libby in the late 1920s, who continued to use the Dickinson variety for canning. Family legend has it that the pumpkin pie recipe on the Libby can was developed by Hazel Dickinson, wife of Richard, one of the three original founders. SSE Accession # 119977
