Early Red Ball

Unform variety of round beets with purple skin and flesh. Roots are rough skinned, sit about halfway submerged in the soil and do not have root branching or root grooves. Plants grow to be between 11-15 inches high and roots are between 2.6-3 inches wide, 2.4-3.9 inches long and 4.6-13.9 ounces. Flavor is sour and somewhat earthy with no sweetness. Plant growth is upright and leaves are glabrous with purple petioles. This accession matches the description of Early Red Ball listed in the Asheville Seed Company catalogue from 1919.
