A. cruentus. Beautifully deep amaranthine stems, petioles, lanceolate leaf blades, and inflorescences. Stems slender and branched; good for cutting. Plants measured 3-4.5' tall in 2025 at Heritage Farm, but averaged 6' when grown in 2010. Highly uniform. Dark seeded. Donated to SSE by Ben Gabel (SPAI GA B) who received this variety from the USDA-ARS (PI 566897). Collected from the Nilakanta family of Iowa in 1991. Originally from the southern state of Kerala, India. Gabel uses it as a vegetable either on its own or in soups, stews and curries. SSE Accession # 100104
