Catapano

VEGETABLES / TOMATO
RED
Frank Catapano, of Woodbridge (near Toronto), Ontario, Canada, received seeds of an unknown variety from a gardening friend in the mid 1990's. Beginning in 1998, Frank grew this line for flavor and productivity. They were originally described as heart-shaped, meaty and very tasty. In 2005, one plant produced 200 lbs. of tomatoes. From that point, he began to weigh individual tomatoes. He grew one as large as 3.4 lbs., and another grower, Russ Landry, grew a 5.41 lbs. giant off that specimen. These tomatoes have an unusual, blocky lobed shaped, similar to Bezrazmernyi. Several fruits produced a distinctive nose-like protuberance. Vines are very healthy and productive. Fruit flavor is very good: pleasant and delicious, though somewhat mild. Variety name Catapano decided upon in 2014 by Russ and Frank, as this variety now seems to be distinct from any others. Pictures are of a 2.436 lb. specimen and others.
