VEGETABLES / LETTUCE
LEAF
Beautiful, purple-green looseleaf lettuce. Leaves are thick and textured. Plants are flat-topped and medium-sized. Plants are cold hardy and withstand environmental stress very well. Good bolt resistance. Leaves are chewy with a texture similar to romaine. Midribs are crisp. Flavor is good and noticeably sweet. Black seed. This lettuce variety has been stewarded by William "Bill" Roberts of Fort Smith, Arkansas for more than 30 years (since at least the late 1980s). Bill has gardened since the mid 1950s and moved to Fort Smith in 1969 where met Wilson Williams. Bill doesn't remember exactly when Wilson shared the lettuce with him, but Wilson had already been growing for several years. It originally come from Wilson's father, who lived 30 miles east of Fort Smith. Bill likes that the leaves keep well in the fridge and often uses them salads. SSE Accession # 133218
