Biennial. Black, triangular roots, long and tapered. Numerous lateral roots. Roots completely buried. Slightly coarse skin texture. White flesh. Large, prostrate leaves with a purple petiole. Roots become quite large. Best eaten under 4-5" long and 1.5" in diameter. Good flavor and texture. Slightly bitter, very spicy. Crisp. Donated to SSE by the late Mary Schultz (WA SC M) who obtained the variety from Laszlo Orban, Budapest in 1991; from CV Hermes. SSE Accession # 118714
